Alex Wheatle (1963 — 2025) was a British novelist, known for his vivid and gritty portrayals of urban life and Black British experience. Growing up in care in south London, and later involved in the 1981 Brixton riots, he turned to writing after a short prison sentence — publishing his debut novel Brixton Rock in 1999.
