I like the way reading the book made me feel
Olive is a little girl with a big heart. Her mother died when she was little and ever since then, her father has been clouded by sadness. Olive imagines a big, grey elephant following him wherever he goes. If the elephant was there, then sadness was there too.
With the help of Grandad, Freddie the dog and best friend Arthur, she set out to chase the elephant away. After they made her dad happy again and chased the elephant away, Olive said goodbye to a secret imaginary animal; Freddie the dog. Freddie had helped Olive fix her family and now she didn’t need him anymore. She imagined him walking off, knowing his job was over.
I like the happy ending. I like that Olive was able to make her family happy again. I like the way reading the book made me feel. I feel like I understand what it’s like when someone really close to you dies a bit better than I used to. This book made me feel sad at some points and happy at others.
I don’t really dislike anything about this book. Well, except that the elephant represent sadness because I love elephants. They are grey and heavy, but I like them!
My favourite character is Arthur. He is funny, kind and always puts a positive spin on things. He has frizzy hair and a great personality. He’ll do anything he can to help a person in need. Olive is lucky to have a friend as great as Arthur.
I rate this book 5 stars!

This is a special and thought-provoking book for readers who like reading stories that allow scope for reflection.
Written and illustrated by Peter Carnavas this book reminds me a little of the children’s classic Le Petit Prince by Antoine de St-Exupery.
The Elephant is a touching story about a girl who tries to lift her father’s sadness.
A large grey elephant is following Olive’s father around. It leaves with him for work and is still trailing behind him when he comes home again, keeping him heavy and sad.
Every day, Olive wishes it would go and with the help of a four-legged friend she finds a way to make him smile again.
