The Beast of Farrowfell Written by Ravena Guron. Reviewed by Radhika, Age 8

This was, by far, one of the best books I have ever read as I followed Jude while she flew elatedly over jewel bright lawns in a flying carriage, broke skilfully into high security mansions and braved the wrath of the behemoth Beast of Farrowfell valiantly.

I loved how this book portrayed magic in a new way – instead of traditional wands and spells there are different types of edible magic – Invisibility is like grainy cream coloured sand that slips tantalisingly away from your hand, Speed is a grey sphere like a marble ready to whizz away from you and climbing is a deep midnight blue and tastes like strawberries. I was enchanted by the way the land embraces magic and don’t keep it under wraps. I also loved how it was full of lies and deceit – like when Jude realised that the all-powerful all-pure creators of tamed magic are evil.

While Moorly is strong and fierce and Jude’s friends Eri and Fin are hilarious and magnanimous, my favorite character is Jude – the unsuspecting hero of this heart wrenching tale as she is determined to serve justice to those who deserve it.

I would recommend this book to fans of a dollop of adventure and fantasy and a hint of mystery. This is incontrovertibly, irrefutably and undeniably the most thrilling book I have ever read. If I had to describe this book in three words they would be – Thrilling, Fantastical and Magical. A must read for 8-10 year olds.
