My first impression of this book was that the cover looks so interesting and mysterious, and I was excited to read it. The blurb made it sound mysterious and even more amazing.
I was really curious to know what it was about, so I started reading straight away. I was right because the story was mysterious and exciting and made me feel curious to know what will happen next!
My favourite Star Friend is Maya and favourite Star Animal is Bracken because they are really enthusiastic and different in a good way. Bracken speaks up and shares his knowledge, so he is fun to read about.
I really loved how the author used more than one idea before they got to the end of the mystery. It showed the characters determination and how they didn’t give up even when things were tricky to solve.
The illustrations were really detailed, and they bring out the story. On pages where there wasn’t a picture, the words created really detailed pictures in my head.
One phrase in the story made me feel excited was “stop the crime!” What crime? How exciting!
The end doesn’t tell you everything, so it makes you curious to read the other books in the set.
This book made me learn if you give up straight away you will never find the answer, but if you keep going you are sure to find the answer.
I would recommend this book to people who like crime books and books about not giving up and mysteries.

Do you believe in magic? Maddie and her friends do!
And when they meet the Star Animals, a whole world of adventure unfolds.
After a village charity run, many of the adults in Westcombe (including most of the Star Friends’ parents), start to become very energetic and throw caution to the wind when it comes to their responsibilities.
Maddie’s mum seems unaffected, but the other Star Friends’ parents are suddenly making random online purchases and arranging spontaneous trips out.
Maddie is a little jealous at first, but as the adults become more reckless, she realises that dark magic is at work – where is it coming from?
