Picklewitch & Jack and the Sea Wizard’s Secret Reviewed by Jonah, Age 8

Picklewitch and Jack are off on a school trip to the beach in this story. If you haven’t read any other Picklewitch and Jack books you might not know that Picklewitch is a tree witch. Picklewitch didn’t want to go on the trip until she heard there was going to be “ice – screams.”

At the beach, they meet Fiza Sharptooth who tells them she is a fossil hunter. Fiza sets the class a fossil hunting challenge where the prize is a fossil hammer, called a Bone Star. Picklewitch and Jack hunt for fossils. While they hunting they meet a sea wizard on the beach, she is called Scowling Margaret. There are talking seagulls, night time adventures and an angry fossil hunter. Picklewitch and Jack make an interesting discovery hiding in Scowling Margaret’s cave. This discovery leads to a great plot twist!

The illustrations in the book are great. They are very detailed and my favourite is the view through some binoculars which I think is really cool.

I really enjoyed this book because of the plot twist. It is also very funny and adventurous. The funniest character is Picklewitch by far.

This book was a real page-turner as the action unfolds you want to find out what happens next.

I read it really quickly because I was engrossed and wanted to see how the story ended.

I would recommend this book for all children who like funny adventure stories, aged 7-10.
