Book Review

I think people who are interested in disabilities or like guinea pigs would like this book.

If I had to describe the book in three words I would say ‘France’ and ‘prosthetic leg’

“Elton John” “Colin” “Harry Styles” – these are some of Maya’s many guinea pigs. There are five who don’t have names which made me wonder what they’re called?

There’s a really funny bit where Harry Styles the guinea pig tries to get into Maya’s suitcase. At the end Elton John tries to eat the cardboard Eiffel tower.

Levi thought that Maya had actual pigs on her bed which were very muddy and stinky because he is learning English and thought guinea pigs were a type of pig. Look on page 17 for a picture of a guinea pig looking at a phone.

I liked the bit where Maya’s friend Miles buys lots of berets because he is going to France and thinks everyone in France wears berets. My big brother asked to borrow this book and he likes berets so I think he will like this part.

When I first started the book I was worried it might make children want to use social media. I think books about social media should be for age 13 and older. But the story does show some of the problems with social media.

I think people who are interested in disabilities or like guinea pigs would like this book.

Ben’s big brother says: I think Maya was very lucky that Levi and her friends forgave her because she behaved very badly. I also have a limb difference and sometimes people stare a bit but I agree with Maya that they’re usually just curious. I’ve reserved ‘How to Roller Skate With One Leg’ from the library so I can read more about Maya.

About the Book

Maya’s class is going on a French exchange trip to Paris and she can’t wait to climb to the top of the Eiffel Tower, learn how to make macaroons and visit Disneyland. In hopes of becoming a disability influencer, Maya decides to share the trip with her online followers.

But things don’t go to plan when Maya is matched with Levi, a grumpy boy who isn’t even on social media. Sightseeing with a prosthetic leg isn’t easy, but Maya doesn’t want her followers to know she’s struggling.

When Maya falls out with her real-life friends over her carefully curated content, can she find the courage to be honest and win them back?
