Book Review

Heartrending, action-packed and exciting, this book has all emotions interlinked together like the scales of a dragon

This masterpiece enveloped me in Emba’s fantastical, peril-riddled world as she embarks on a sacrificial quest to save her guardian. I watched in nerve-wracking anticipation on the edge of my seat as Emba apprehensively discovers her inner dragon , giggled euphorically at Odolf’s (Emba’s wannabe friend) hilarious shenanigans as he fantasises about being a hero and frustratingly tried to decipher the cryptic riddles of the tome of terrible tomorrows.

I loved how the book ended on a cliff hanger, inviting me alluringly to read the next instalment of this wonderful series.

I admired Emba’s relentless determination-how she perseveres, has unfaltering faith and has unwavering allegiance to her guardian, no matter how defeated she felt. From fighting off malicious bears to facing petrifying execution, she was true to the end. I laughed at Odolf’s goofiness as he obsesses over his “magic” belt buckle, fights a war with a magpike over his helmet and goes on and on about a seemingly imaginary inn.

I did find that he had a tendency to resign and surrender which tarnished my opinion of him overall but he added to the drama and fast -paced excitement of the book. Fred, Emba’s adopted parent was kind, wise and understanding. She is extremely selfless, willing to sacrifice herself to save Emba. The characters were all life-like and relatable and like a perfectly brewed potion swirled effortlessly in the cauldron of family bonds and friendship.

The illustrations were mesmerising and I particularly enjoyed the inspired chapter headings. From “The Thrilling Thwump of Destiny” to “The Calamitous Climax”, this was an unforgettable adventure.

Heartrending, action-packed and exciting, this book has all emotions interlinked together like the scales of a dragon. I would give this book 11 out of 10 and recommend it to 8+ who love a fantasy/adventure novel and I can’t wait to read the next book. If you liked “How to Train your dragon”, then you will love this rollercoaster ride of a book.

About the Book

Emba Oak always knew that she wasn’t normal – and the iridescent, topaz scales on her arms and legs are just the outer representation of this. When Emba realises she hatched out of a dragon egg, her life doesn’t get any easier.

It turns out that people with evil, nefarious intentions are after her priceless dragon’s blood -and will stop at nothing to get it. When Emba’s life takes a shocking turn for the worse, will she manage to save the only parent she ever had? Or will she perish in the attempt?
