Amari and the Night Brothers Written by B. B. Alston. Reviewed by Ivan, Age 9

Amari and The Night Brothers is emotional, funny and scary all at the same time. I like this book because it has a black main character and most books don’t have black heroes. The main character is a girl called Amari. She is very poor and lives in a small flat with her mum. But when she gets invited to a strange summer camp and discovers that she is a magician she has to endure even more bullying than she used to.

My favourite character is Mr Ware who works in the bureau of supernatural affairs because he always wears an orange jacket covered in feathers which made me laugh and he is really funny. In fact a lot of this book is funny. I think that’s quite unusual for a fantasy book.

Another thing I liked is the fact that a lot of old story characters are in this including Sherlock Holmes and Van Helsing!

Although there aren’t many pictures in this book there’s a little illustration at the start of each chapter, but the design of the book is really cool because it has glittery silver page edges and the cover is designed to look like the night sky, which is really effective.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Harry Potter because it reminds me of it a lot, or anyone who likes things involving ghosts, zombies and other fantasy characters.

It’s the sort of book that makes you want to find out what happens next because it has a really good ending so I hope there will be more books in the series.
