I would recommend this series to young adults looking for a dystopia with engaging plot and well-rounded characters to root for
After the cliffhanger ending of These Stolen Lives, I was very excited to have the opportunity to read its sequel, and This Shattered Promise is just as beautifully crafted as the first book. The books are set in a dystopia in which the main characters’ home has been invaded. Under the new rule, the right to live must be paid for and the survivors of the invasion are enslaved to pay off the debt of the years they have already lived.
This Shattered Promise continues the story of Kit and Mora in the aftermath of the events of the first book. While Kit continues to work in secret rebellion against the empire that rules their home, Mora is forced to aid Sciencemaster General, Sacrifice Sting, in his search through the knowledge of Kit’s native people, the Xan, for the key to immortality. Such power could be devastating in the wrong hands, and Kit and Mora once again find themselves at the centre of the web of rebellion.
This book was beautifully written. Moving, emotional, and high-stakes, it more than lives up to the brilliance of These Stolen Lives.

Sharada Keats
Sharada Keats is an Australian-born writer of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry for young people, best known for her debut young adult dystopian fantasy These Stolen Lives (2024) and its sequel This Shattered Promise (2025).
Born in Kalgoorlie in 1982 and raised in Australia and Canada with family roots in Guyana and Yorkshire, she studied agricultural economics and has worked in the third sector before turning to writing. Keats now lives in London.
