the author foreshadows parts of the ending to us very subtly which adds to the feelings of tension and suspense throughout the story
A dystopian future where the world is split between the perfect and imperfect and nothing is what it seems.
Ora’s life has been plagued with secrets, and with the tensions in her life rising can she find out the truth about not only her past but about the Hospital, the government and especially the mysterious Vulpine?
My favourite part of this book was the way that it always kept you guessing and with all the plot twists I found it a struggle to put down as well as never failing as an exciting read.
My favourite character was Casta as not only did he stay a loyal friend throughout, but he would always pop up when our Protagonist needed him relaying to the idea that he was always going to be there for Ora.
Another great thing about this book was the fact that will make anyone no matter the reader feel a vast range of emotions such as: shock, anxiety and joy.
As well as this throughout the novel Polly Crosby foreshadows parts of the ending to us very subtly which adds to the feelings of tension and suspense throughout the story.
All in all, this book would be great for fans of adventure, horror and fantasy series as it highlights all of these qualities well through the book. I believe that although it feels that the Vulpine has taken ideas from other stories as any other good writer would, it could still be compared with the likes of Harry Potter even if it is not the same kind of genre. Altogether I would recommend this book for children over the age of 11 hoping that they would enjoy it.
To finish I would give the book a solid 9 out of 10 as, after all, nothing’s perfect.
About the Book
Ola has always been fascinated by chilling fairy stories of the Vulpine – the mythical, fox-like monsters who live below ground, emerging at night to snatch ‘imperfect’ babies and children. Because Ora knows that disability and illness have no place in her world. To succeed is to be genetically ‘perfect’, just like her best friend Casta and his family.
Then, one day, Casta’s baby sister disappears. And Ora’s mother reveals a long-buried secret: Ora herself has a genetic illness that affects her lungs… And she’s about to be found out.
Desperate for answers and sanctuary, Ora decides to do the unthinkable and seek out the fabled Vulpine. And below the earth, she discovers a hidden world that turns everything she has been taught upside-down…

Polly Crosby
Polly Crosby is a British writer whose work spans adult fiction and young adult novels, including the dystopian The Vulpine and This Tale is Forbidden. She grew up on the Suffolk coast and now lives in Norfolk, with her storytelling often inspired by landscape and human experience. Crosby’s debut novel 'The Illustrated Child' was published after she won writing scholarships and was runner up in the Bridport Prize, and she continues to build a diverse body of work across genres
