it’s written in the third person but you get to see and hear a lot of what is going on inside Maeve’s head so you feel immersed in the story and are able to empathise with the main characters
My favourite character was Maeve’s friend Nan as although she doesn’t play a central role in the story at first, she becomes very important to the plot overall in helping Maeve with some great moments. I enjoyed the way the character was written as someone you don’t take too much notice of at first but slowly becomes pivotal to the story.
This book had a great narrative structure – it’s written in the third person but you get to see and hear a lot of what is going on inside Maeve’s head so you feel immersed in the story and are able to empathise with the main characters.
I really enjoyed the world building of The Otherwhere Post. I have read many fantasy novels and so many of them feel too heavily inspired by the worlds made by authors such as Tolkien and J K Rowling. Whereas this world felt completely original so it was lots of fun exploring it. I hope that it gets a sequel at some point.
If you enjoy YA fantasy books such as those written by Philip Pullman, or even mystery novels with a bit of dark romance thrown in, then I think you would enjoy The Otherwhere Post.
A Short Introduction to the Story
The Otherwhere Post is a novel by Emily J Taylor, set in a fantasy world where everything is controlled by magical writing spells called Scriptomancy.
The story follows a girl called Maeve, who is hiding her identity from the world as her father’s dark past and criminal behaviour has made it hard for her to be accepted into society.
But after receiving a mysterious letter that claims her father is innocent, she must infiltrate a school of Scriptomancy called The Otherwhere Post to try and uncover the truth behind her father’s actions. Things soon become dangerous for Maeve as others around her start to question her identity and whether she is as innocent as she seems.
