I feel like this book will be read in classrooms all over the world
Hurricane Child opened my eyes, I was able to feel what Caroline felt and see the world from her point of view. The book really makes you think. I knew about racism but I was really seeing it from Caroline’s perspective and understanding how it made her feel. It was sad that people could do that and it showed me what happens in some places in the world.
I loved Caroline’s perspective about love, she didn’t care what people thought – she knew she could love whoever she wanted even though people said it was wrong to love a girl. When I first met Kalinda in the story, and Caroline got to know her, it slowly built up to you knowing that Caroline was in love with Kalinda. You knew even before she said it.
At first Kalinda dislikes Caroline after she tells her about her love for her, but she slowly realises that she is in love with Caroline too. It is a super great book and I would definitely recommend it. It teaches you and takes you on an emotional rollercoaster. I feel like this book will be read in classrooms all over the world.
About the Book
This award-winning story for readers aged 8-12 years from Kacen Callendar is about a 12-year-old Caroline, who was born during a hurricane and is having a hard time at the moment. She’s hated and bullied by everyone in her small school on St. Thomas of the US Virgin Islands, a spirit only she can see won’t stop following her, and – worst of all – Caroline’s mother left home a while ago, never came back and her father won’t talk about her.
When a new student arrives on the island, a solemn girl from Barbados with a special smile for everyone, she becomes Caroline’s first and only friend — and the person for whom Caroline has begun to develop a crush.
Now, Caroline must find the strength to confront her feelings for Kalinda, brave the spirit stalking her through the islands, and face the reason her mother abandoned her. Together, Caroline and Kalinda must set out in a hurricane to find Caroline’s missing mother — before Caroline loses her for ever.

Kacen Callender
Kacen Callender (born 19 September 1989) is a Saint-Thomian-born, award-winning author whose work spans middle grade, young adult, and adult fiction. Their debut middle-grade novel Hurricane Child (2018) earned them the Stonewall Book Award and a Lambda Literary Award, and their later book King and the Dragonflies won the National Book Award for Young People's Literature in 2020.
