The Girl Who Broke the Sea Written by A. Connors. Reviewed by Iona, Age 13

I really enjoyed the story because it is gripping and well written. It takes place in an unusual setting at the bottom of the ocean which made me understand and feel how isolating and scary it must feel to be stuck there without much outside contact.

Lily is a strong female lead facing every problem she encounters even though things can be hard for her. As the story progresses, I felt sympathy for her and understood her frustration when no adults would listen or believe her. I like how determined she is and never gives up, showing that even when life is difficult something can be achieved.

This book really emphasises the value of friendship and shows that anyone can find friends even in unusual places, and what invaluable help they can bring. I really liked Ari, an adult in the rig, who is always happy and brightens up the atmosphere even when things are bad.

My favourite part of the story is towards the end as it reaches the final adventure when Lily and her friends make one last attempt to save everyone. I enjoyed how tense this section was and I couldn’t put the book down until the conclusion.

I would recommend “The Girl who Broke the Sea” to readers who are aged 13 and above (including adults!) as it talks about emotions and issues encountered by young people.

The short chapters and vocabulary make it easy to follow and quick to read. The novel would appeal to readers who enjoy exciting adventures with some mystery and science fiction. I will be on the lookout for more books by this author as I enjoyed his writing style.
