Book Review
It always kept me on the edge of my seat and would constantly raise many questions in my mind
Stranger Skies is the second book in the Drowned Gods trilogy and it was the perfect follow on to Curious Tides which I reviewed earlier this year and loved reading. Once again an extraordinarily imagined story with many interesting new characters and new worlds to explore.
I liked how the book was split into sections, starting with a small scene giving a backstory to a new character about to enter the story. It made it easier to understand all the new characters and it was nice to already know something about them.
Another thing I liked about this book is how unpredictable it was. It’s not one of those stories where you can sort of tell how it’s going to end, it always kept me on the edge of my seat and would constantly raise many questions in my mind.
One small critique, I found it a bit hard to sympathise with the character Romie. The first book was the story of Emory trying to find her after Romie had disappeared, and how independent she had become on her own. However, prior to Romie’s disappearing she had grown distant to Emory and their friendship was very rocky. That being said, it was a bit weird to suddenly have her in the midst after not really knowing much about her in the first book and you could tell there was something wrong between her and Emory and their friendship.
I thought that the constant theme of how Emory was regarded based on who she was and her bloodline was a really powerful message as it reflected on silly prejudices people have. It showed the importance of getting to know people before judging them as you can never really know someone unless you actually interact with them.
I would recommend this book to independent readers of age 14+ and I also think you should definitely have read the previous book first as I don’t think this book would make any sense if you didn’t.
Sadly, the book left on another major cliffhanger, but I’ll be keeping my eyes out for any news on the next instalment!
