She started playing football in a refugee camp and also learnt the new language. She never stopped giving up
This book reminds me of a book I read this year in school. It was called ‘I am Malala’. It had a similar baseline and was about war in Afghanistan, the Taliban taking over her country. Nadia Nadim had a hard young life. Nadia’s journey was inspirational but dangerous. Her dad was wealthy and important, and one day he suddenly disappeared…..He was killed by the Taliban, the people who are taking over the country. Things were changing rapidly for them and many others.
This meant her mum, sisters and herself had to leave the country because they had no freedom. Having a long journey ahead of her and not knowing what’s going on, leaving her home country and coming to another one far away not even knowing the language, facing many challenges, with her family they kept on going. She started playing football in a refugee camp and also learnt the new language. She never stopped giving up.
Now Nadia Nadim is a professional Danish football player. She wants others to shoot for the stars just like her. I enjoyed this book because it was a mystery during which I didn’t know where the story was going but it was an interesting adventure.
About the Book
Nadia Nadim was born in to a prosperous and well connected family in Afghanistan. She is one of five sisters who, with their Mother, had to leave their war torn country in fear of severe repression and even violence against them. Her story is one of an incredible and dangerous journey across continents to start a new life without fear of war and danger.
It’s a story of starting again with nothing and with determination, courage, resilience, and talent, building a new life. Nadia’s story is a story of hope, arriving in a country where she did not understand the language to becoming a world famous football star, a doctor (and surgeon), a linguist, a broadcaster and a role model.
In July 2019, Nadia was named UNESCO Champion for Girls and Women’s Education.

Michaela Morgan has written more than 200 books for a wide range of ages. Her books span fiction, non-fiction and poetry and have won, or been shortlisted for, a plethora of prizes.
Michaela published Respect, the true-life story of Black British football player Walter Tull and also Walter Tull’s Scrapbook. She loved seeing the inspiring effect that these books had on readers and, since then, she has been constantly on the lookout for another story of inspirational resilience, courage and determination.
