Book Review

this book is super scary!!

Warning: this book is super scary!!! I found this book so vivid that I couldn’t sleep.
If I had to describe this book in three words I would say: scary, realistic and mysterious. It is set in past wetlands which makes the hamlet isolated from help.

It is very clever how the author has made it almost ironic because at the beginning we know there is an evil reflection but the characters don’t. Later we only know that the evil reflection is a villager and at some point which house it is from but we don’t know exactly who it is.

I don’t think marshblight is a real thing but it is a disease and is caused by gnats. It is based on various insect diseases like malaria.

Don’t read this book at night and make sure you read this book with someone else in sunlight so you won’t be frightened. I also recommend this for ages 10+ because I think I was a bit too young to enjoy it.

Mum says:
I also read the book and can understand why Ben found it so scary: it is full of tension and suspense. Ben said that not knowing exactly what the reflection looked like made it scarier. The setting of the wetlands also adds to the suspense and danger, with lots of mist and a constant risk of falling off the pathways. There is a violent attack which I found quite gruesome even as an adult.

About the Book

The village of Harrowmere is plagued by strangeness: foggy boglands, eerie wraithlights and the legend of Grasping Jack. So how could local boy Dunn Caulkner have known that the darkest threat of all would come from a mirror?

Nobody questions the travelling salesman touting looking glasses. Nor do Dunn and his friends see any harm in a ritual said to reveal your true self. After all, what could be dangerous about a reflection?

The answer is everything…
