Book Review

This book is an incredible guide to conscious shopping that everyone should read at some point

Fashion Conscious is an interesting and thought-provoking read. I have to admit that some of the facts about the industry are hard to swallow and they really made me think about what I could be doing to prevent disastrous outcomes. I suggest giving yourself time to absorb the information and reflect upon the responsibility we have as individuals.

I’m sure that one of the aims of the creators was to make this book accessible and they have done this very well; the diagrams and illustrations make the information more digestible. The vocabulary is fairly uncomplicated and there are a wide range interesting interviews with and profiles about people in the fashion industry who are trying to make a difference.

I have some previous experience of working with textiles, but I believe that anyone could follow and understand the guides and explanations, because they are uncomplicated and clearly presented. The ideas for fashion conscious communities are well thought through and instructive with enough breathing room to make the project results truly your own. (Though with the current Covid-19 climate some details may need to be altered)

Fashion is an integral part of image and life for many of my generation and this book has definitely changed my views on fashion and shopping as a whole. Before reading this book, I had never really considered second-hand shopping, however I can now see that if I had gone about my trips another way they might have been more enjoyable, rewarding and saved me money! This book has shown me that there are different decisions you need to make when shopping for clothes and that my decisions greatly affect the lives of others.

Ultimately, I would recommend this book to everyone who is struggling with their wardrobe. The step-by-step guides and flow charts are incredibly helpful. Having read this book, I am looking forward to having a fun time up cycling my wardrobe!
