I would highly recommend this book to 12+ who enjoy sci-fi with a little dystopia
Electric Life follows the story of Alarra Trip, a girl who wanted more to life. Alarra lives in Estrella, a didgitilised world filled with happiness and wonder. A place where nothing can go wrong. No illnesses. No pain. No dirt. No boredom. Its perfect in every way possible.
But now this perfect place is starting to bore Alarra. So when someone one offers here a mission in London under, she takes it with no hesitation. And when she gets there, she is filled with a sense of awe and wonder she’s never felt before. But she’s also scared and worried. She can’t wait to get back to her perfect life. Or can she?
Alarra trips character perfectly resembles a teenager. From her thoughts about Jay to her fear of when she’ll see her family next. And the way she feels when she is experiencing something new captures the feeling amazingly. She’s an amazing character and I love how she is able to face her fears.
My favourite line is “Feel that? Can you feel it? It’s real Alarra. This is all real. No Sensii trip can give you the shock of fresh spring water.” Jay says this to Alarra, showing her that nature is beautiful and the ai of it will never be able to compare to to its real beauty.
My favourite character is Martha. She’s an all around amazing character. She loves Alarra for who she is even though no one else trusts her. She’s always happy and energetic and the way she acts and talks, you can tell she would be the kindest person ever.
I loved this book so much. It did take me a while to get into it but after that I read it in one sitting.
I would highly recommend this book to 12+ who enjoy sci-fi with a little dystopia.
About the Book
Alara’s incredible gaming skills bring her to the attention of Estrella’s leaders. She is chosen to go on a dangerous mission to gather ‘vital’ intelligence. Estrella is the perfect society, an immaculate, sanitised, connected environment where everything is channelled through the digital medium.
There is no dirt, no pain, no disease, no natural world, even feelings like boredom are frowned upon and discouraged. Alara is dropped down to London Under and into a “new” world which bewilders her and disorientates her.
Will she accomplish her mission? How will she get back to Estrella and her family and her life without worry?

Rachel Delahaye is a children’s book author known for humorous and adventurous middle-grade fiction, including the Mort the Meek and Jim Reaper series as well as the Little Animal Rescue books. After studying linguistics she worked in print journalism across London, Sydney and Melbourne before transitioning full-time to writing stories that delight young readers.
