I knew that the layout would be like a video game or fantasy novel, but I didn’t know it would be this riveting!
Contender: The Champion is a gripping and exciting book about how Cade Carter and his friends fight off aliens, battle an evil alien mastermind, and discover many historical and scientific facts. I was drawn into the book, and it was a page-turner. Having read the first book already, I knew that the layout would be like a video game or fantasy novel, but I didn’t know it would be this riveting!
Taran Matharu, the author, makes the words come off the page and I didn’t know what was going to happen next. Although when you first pick it up, Contender: The Champion may seem like a fantasy book, it also has lots of historical facts included throughout, with references to the dinosaurs, romans, some historic ships, and many things from the 20th century.
I really enjoyed this book because it is comprehensive and action packed, but it has a few swear words and lots of violence in it, so I would only say it is suitable for anyone above the age of 12. The story makes sense without having read the first and second books in the series, so you don’t really need to have read them beforehand.
I would suggest that you read it whether you like fantasy, science fiction, history, or video games.

This is the concluding book in the Contender series by bestselling historical fantasy writer Taran Matharu. The trilogy, features the hero Cade, who so far has just about managed to survive the duel with the Hydra Alpha – But the Games are far from over.
By order of the cruel and mysterious alien overlord, Abaddon, Cade and his friends are sent off to war against the Greys, a humanoid race who have far surpassed humans in technology on their home planet.
A GLIMMER OF HOPE?
This attempt to move up the leaderboard leads Cade to a game-changing revelation: The Pantheon – the millennia-old alien masterminds behind the Games – have a weakness.
With the right artefacts scavenged from the land of Acies and a heavy dose of courage and luck, Cade has exactly one chance to end their tyranny for ever. But if he fails, for the lives of his friends and the survival of Earth it will be …
GAME OVER
