A Murder of Rogues is a brilliant romance- murder mystery that follows the murder of not one but two characters due to their tendency to keep secrets and use them for bribery.
Although the main character starts the story as Cascabel, they take their twin brother’s name of Tom so that they can attend Oxford University. The book is set in 1800s England and higher education was not possible for most women. Later on in the story the character begins to discover their true self ,Pom.
The book begins with Cascabel acting as her twin brother Tom and hoping she won’t be caught. Throughout the book they fall further and further into the act. By the end of the book Pom has begun to fall in love with Mouse, who they met through the infirmary they were learning to be a surgeon at.
The story has themes through the entire book of self-discovery and having to work for the things you want.
I would recommend this book to people of a similar age to me (teenagers) and those possibly slightly older.
About the Book
In Regency England, Cascabel Gray dreams of freedom – and disguises herself as a boy to secure a place at Oxford University. After all, she’s as comfortable in breeches as she is in ballgowns.
Her plans are upended, however, when she receives a blackmail letter from Charles Lafleur, a member of infamous secret society the Rogues Club, threatening to expose her.
But when Lafleur is found dead, the plot thickens… and Cascabel becomes a prime suspect in his murder. She joins the Rogues Club to conduct an investigation of her own, and her life soon begins to spiral out of control.
To survive, she must switch between her male and female personas, attracting both fellow student William Grenville and a chambermaid known as Mouse – and even attending a ball with an Austrian prince. Can she find a way to balance her double life and clear her name, before she loses everything?

Joe Heap
Joe Heap was born in 1986 and grew up in Bradford, the son of two teachers. In 2004, he won the Foyle Young Poets award, and his poetry has been published in pamphlets and periodicals. He studied for a BA in English Literature at Stirling University and earned a Masters in Creative Writing from Glasgow University.
