this book shows you... most of all, it is good to imagine
I really enjoyed this book. It was full of mystery and magic. It taught me about how others and myself should embrace life and live it to the fullest no matter what happens. Recently, a really close neighbour and friend passed away and it was really tough but my family and I had to move on, keeping him alive in our hearts and memories.
Laurie is a girl who does not have many friends. She is not bold, just an ordinary girl. She wanted to fit in so made up Neon. Not only did Laurie make up Neon, she created a whole life for him!
Although Neon was a figment of Laurie’s imagination, one day he magically appears out of nowhere. Neon becomes Laurie’s best friend and is always there for her, even when times are difficult for him. He turns Laurie’s world upside down and teaches her how to be true to herself. He gives her the encouragement to try new things. He is a great buddy who is also kind to anyone and everyone.
In this story, like most stories, something bad happens. In this story many people appear from Neon’s world. This is not allowed to happen and a patrol called the Blanks arrive to erase them all leaving Neon in grave danger and seeing a safe place to hide. He overcomes this by believing in himself and others. He belongs in Laurie’s world.
This book shows you how life is sometimes unexpected. Make the most of the times you have with people and most of all, it is good to imagine.
About the Book
Laurie loves stories. She loves reading them in her mums’ bookshop in their small Scottish town. She loves sharing them with new readers. She also loves telling stories about people she’s not yet met and places she’s not yet been. But when one of these people comes crashing into Laurie’s world, it turns her whole life upside down.
Neon is the boy Laurie’s been dreaming of for the last six months, and he’s exactly as she had created him – down to his ability to play any instrument he picks up. And when he steps off the train and into Laurie’s world, he teaches her what it means to be real.

Sophie Cameron
Sophie Cameron is a YA and MG author from the Scottish Highlands. She studied French and Comparative Literature at the University of Edinburgh and has a Postgraduate Certificate in Creative Writing from Newcastle University. Her debut novel OUT OF THE BLUE was nominated for the Carnegie Medal 2019.
