I love the pictures in the book, they are so colourful and there is lots to look at
From Sophie: My Mummy read me this book. I liked it because the queen protects the street. The little girl was so helpful and kind and noticed the queen when no one else did. I love the pictures in the book, they are so colourful and there is lots to look at. My favourite page is where the queen sits outside at bedtime protecting the street and she is bright in the street light.
From Mum: Sophia and I have read this book several times. She really enjoys the story but takes it very much at face value, like a fairy tale. The deeper message from the book is a bit lost at the moment, but the book is so beautiful that the ‘feelings’ from it are absorbed. I thought this was a lovely introduction to a difficult subject and would be a great book for a class to discuss the topics further.
About the Book
This picture book could be a gateway to an interesting conversation with young children about homelessness and the people who are visible on the streets of our communities but are frequently ignored.
Nobody notices the Queen on the corner. Nobody, that is… except one young girl. Through her eyes, the woman who dwells in the abandoned plot is a warrior queen, with many battles fought and won. When, one day, danger comes to the street and the Queen on the corner sounds the alarm, the little girl must find a way to thank her. Can she bring the community together to turn the Queen’s corner into a home?

Lucy Christopher
Lucy Christopher is a British-Australian author, celebrated for her young adult novels — especially her debut Stolen, which won the Branford Boase Award in 2010, the Gold Inky Award (Australia), and a Michael L. Printz Honor (USA). She has since published several other novels and picture books for young people, and now works as a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at University of Tasmania.

Nia Tudor
Nia Tudor is a freelance children’s‑book illustrator based on the coast of South Wales, UK. She is known for her richly textured, heartfelt illustrations in books such as Grandpas Are the Greatest and The Queen on Our Corner — often drawing on family life for inspiration.
