It’s short enough to hold a young child’s attention but engaging enough that they’ll ask for it again (and again).
Ten Tiny Squirrels is such a lovely and engaging picture book that works so great for younger children, especially those just beginning to explore counting and rhythm in stories like Dhana who just turned two.
From a parent’s perspective, I love how naturally the book blends learning with entertainment. The counting element is interlinked in a playful, slightly mischievous story, which keeps Dhana interested without feeling like a lesson. It’s the kind of book that invites participation – Dhana loved counting along and predicting what might happen next as the number of squirrels changes.
The illustrations are vibrant, expressive, and full of character. Each squirrel has its own personality, and there’s plenty of himour for both children and adults to enjoy.
We also love the rhythm and pacing of the text. It reads aloud smoothly, making it a great choice for bedtime or group storytime. Even the 7 year old brother was enjoying it! It’s short enough to hold a young child’s attention but engaging enough that they’ll ask for it again (and again).
Overall, this is a charming, interactive book that supports early numeracy skills while still being genuinely fun. A great addition to any preschooler’s bookshelf!
